As the world wide web has evolved, the technologies responsible for a website have become more complex and more specialized. In the nineteen-nineties, the majority of websites consisted of static HTML documents interconnected by hyperlinks, with embedded images and webforms that collected simple data and emailed the results to the webmaster. For many businesses a website served merely as an online version of their business card or flyer and could be maintained by an individual, often contracted on a freelance basis.

With the rise of server-side programming languages and database applications the world-wide-web entered into a new age of sophistication. Businesses began to add catalogues of products to their websites through which users could browse and even place orders. As more and more households became connected to the internet, the world-wide-web exploded into todays super-web of e-commerce, online banking, social networking, online gaming and so on.

Today, most websites are developed by a number of individual developers, each with a specific skill and job description, together they form a Web DevelopmentTeam. In most cases a company website requires a web designer - the person responsible for designing the layout, interface, etc. a front-end coder - the person responsible for translating the design into HTML/CSS conforming to the latest W3C specifications to be passed on to the server-side programmer.

The server-side programmer will usually specialize in at least one scripting language such as asp, php, etc. In addition, this person may also be responsible for the database application. Larger enterprises will often employ a database administrator.

In addition to the creation, ongoing maintenance and updating of a website, other areas which require staff include security, network engineers, hosting, server engineers, website optimization and online marketing teams.
